Back to school

Well, our week long vacation ended as the kids returned to school yesterday.  I think I mentioned in a previous entry, last week was the National Holiday here which ended up being a week off (with the way the holiday ended up on a weekend) or rather 10 days off for the kids if you include the weekend.  I oddly looked forward to the week off from school.  While I obviously don't go to school, lately, tutoring them after school each day is crazy hectic - hopping from one child to the other and then juggling to entertain (or rather keep out of trouble) Ella and Eva.  More reason to appreciate teachers!!  It's such an undervalued job!

So as they returned to school, I tried to get back into my routine of hitting the gym.  The gym here is nothing like sweet Lifetime Fitness in Austin and today was no exception.  Arrived to no music playing in the gym and one very buck naked woman coming out of the shower in the locker room.  Holy smokes the flash of all that skin was a enough to fry my eyes and put me into a moment of shock.  Why in the world do these women not use a towel??!  Sometimes the modesty in China is so perplexing...  A friend of mine said she saw a woman in her gym locker room shaving her business in front of the mirror so she could see better.  Anyway, while I was recovering, I suddenly heard someone singing.  I didn't check, but I'm pretty sure the woman was singing in the shower.  Luckily she sang pretty well.  I guess it was an 'ordinary day' at the gym?

Tomorrow some friends invited me to see the "Avocado Lady".  It's apparently a Chinese woman who sells avocados - very difficult to find here - and other imported items we know and love . . . like tortillas, or turkeys (only imported during Thanksgiving), etc.  So I'm excited to see what she has tomorrow and hopefully some decent avocados!  My in-laws are currently visiting and brought me tortilla chips.  I found salsa at an expat grocery store and now, a little avocado and I could have myself a Mexican fiesta!

Ha, funny how Asians in America seem supermodest compared to Asians in their own country. Naked ladies at the gym locker weren't uncommon at Lifetime (at least when I'm over there) but personal grooming? Yikes! Aren't there communal baths over there?
