Today's "Adventures in China" is brought to you by my dear hubby. An innocent evening of hitting the mall to just walk around became a search for Sammy's wallet. (Some of you may know that he lost his iPhone4 back in May when he and I were here together on our house-hunting trip here. He was so jet-lagged & work-tired, that while looking at Google Maps on his phone in a taxi, he fell asleep and dropped his phone unbeknownst to me. We realized what happened but couldn't hail the taxi back in time. After many calls, the driver said it wasn't in his cab and he wasn't coming back. The driver was probably already at a store picking out a new case for "his" phone.)
Anyway, tonight we rode a bus to the mall, got off, walked 1/2 a block to the mall & Burger King (yes, my weekly craving for non-Asian food is still alive and well; more on this later). When Sammy went to pay, he realized his wallet was missing. I stayed with the kids and ate while he ran back to the bus stop to try to see if it was still on the bus. The kids were so sweet and concerned - saying, "Oh, I hope he finds his wallet." One of them said, "Well, is he gonna need to buy a new wallet?" I told them that wasn't the point because there was money in the wallet & credit cards. Then they all eagerly said they'd give him their money that they have saved up. (Awww!) As Sammy was headed to the bus stop, he received a call from the person who found his wallet. A younger couple were on the bus and the girlfriend saw it and picked it up. They weren't sure what to do but found Sammy's business card inside and called his cell number. They told him where they were and Sammy met them and got his wallet back. They even refused Sammy's offer to pay them for their kindness. There are good people in this world and even as far as China! As for the remaining weekend, we are staying home - that was enough adventure for me.
As far as Burger King - not as good as Mickey Ds here. I realized though that the kids eat "Western lunch" once a week at school (they're not allowed to bring lunches unless you have dietary restrictions) and Sammy eats American on his travels and was just in Phoenix a week ago. So, I'm the only one who does not get an opportunity to eat American until the weekend. (The ayi makes dinner (Chinese) before she leaves at noon and thus I just eat that for lunch.)
The only food from home I have tried making is spaghetti. The can of Del Monte spaghetti sauces usually costs a little over $3 but it's worth it. However even spaghetti 3 weeks in a row, gets old. I did attempt our favorite veggie lasagna recipe (thanks Amanda) that calls for chopped spinach and ricotta plus the usual ingredients. However, fresh spinach is not in season here and it's next to impossible to find chopped spinach in the frozen section. Ricotta costs $8 for the same container size I'd get in the States. (At some point, I'm thinking of trying to make my own ricotta....now *that* should be interesting!) So my first attempt at lasagna here was meat sauce, mozzarella cheese, lasagna noodles, repeat. A tiny bit plain but edible. However, tonight's menu attempt - (drum roll) . . . cheeseburgers! :*)
