Garbage ladies
So the other day I ran into the two women who collect the trash from our compound. Eva and I were getting ready to go for a stroll. I had never met or seen them before. One of the women said to me in Chinese, "So, you have *three* girls?". Yes I said. "And one boy?". Yes. Now how did she know I had 4 kids?? Geez Louise! We are even known in our compound...
She also said "girls are good". Apparently the current trend of thought is that girls are better, because they will take care of you when you're old and senile; boys, not so much...I think they feel the boys will be ruled by their wife. What?! I don't rule hubby...do I dear? You better say "no"!!!
Then she questioned why I put no shoes or socks on Eva's feet. Whenever we take Eva out, we get comments or scoldings by grandmotherly types about babies/toddlers needing socks. For us, 90 degree humid weather and a kid who doesn't walk much, just doesn't trigger my brain to put socks or shoes on. Cracks me up that we get scolded for no socks but it's ok for babies/toddlers to have their round bottoms exposed from split pants. I may be held in a sort of awe because of having 4 kids, but I won't win 'mom of the year' here.
