This afternoon it felt like we were ringing in the new year already. Around lunch time, we suddenly heard this 'cock-a-doodle-doo'. I thought it might be one of the kids at first but after the third time, I asked Sammy if he had heard that and he had. We kept hearing it every few minutes and by now, Eva echoed her own version, 'oooo-OOO-oooo', after hearing the sound. We realized it was coming from our next door neighbor's house. Then the kids got a chair and peeked over the fence to confirm that there was a rooster in their yard. We started thinking that our mornings might be cut short with a rooster crowing at the crack of dawn now. When we mentioned this to the ayi, she told us that the neighbors probably bought the rooster/chicken to eat for the new year - kind of like a special meal and it would be *really* fresh. Oh. Hmmm, suddenly I felt sorry for the lil' guy . . . and a bit grossed out.
Happy New Year to all our friends and family! Listen for that cock-a-doodle-doo when Ryan Seacrest drops that ball in Times Square!
Update 1/1/2012: Mr. Rooster did not get eaten last night since we heard him loud and proud at 6:30am till 7:30am and off and on till now (almost 9am). (Katie - why do they crow so long???). Argh! I think I might have found a way to get past buying chicken at the market . . .
